The School System
According to the most recent census, families with school-aged children represent more than a quarter of our community. That makes the quality of the our schools an extraordinarily important issue. Fortunately, we have some of the best facilities in the valley. All of our local schools have been designated by the Arizona Department of Education as “excelling” based on their 2008-09 test scores. And, for the 2009-10 school year, the district has given each classroom 8 laptops for daily use.
The schools serving our community are all part of the Scottsdale Unified School District. Our elementary and middle school students attend the Desert Canyon Elementary School or the Desert Canyon Middle School respectively. These schools share a campus at the corner of Thompson Peak Parkway and McDowell Mountain Ranch Road adjacent to The Ranch. In fact, both schools are accessible via paths that do not require that a student cross any surface streets.
Those of high school age attend Desert Mountain High School, which is located at 12575 E Via Linda. The school boasts a 95% rate of students going on to pursue higher education and was designated one of the nation’s top schools in a 2009 US News & World Report ranking.
The School District also offers students the option of attending a school outside of the "attendance area" in which they reside. This opportunity is contingent upon there being room at the receiving school and the parent agreeing to provide transportation.
Open enrollment forms are available at the beginning of December and the deadline for filing these requests is February 1. Applications received after the deadline may still be considered as long as there is space and staffing available in the grade level. For more information regarding Open Enrollment within the Scottsdale School District, please visit the Scottsdale Unified School District website.
The Scottsdale Unified School District is currently considering the possibility of building a new high school in the DC Ranch community. Please contact the office of the superintendent for current information.
